If you are familiar with the Jane Austen classic, ‘Pride and Prejudice’, then you will remember Pemberley as the estate of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy. In ‘Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley’ you’ll find all of our favorite ‘Pride and Prejudice’ characters reunited in this heartwarming and funny, contemporary Christmas production.
Now playing at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater in the Quadracci Powerhouse Theater through December 16th, whether or not you’re a fan of Austen’s beloved characters, you’ll want to check out this adorable production. Join Mary Bennet, Mr. and Mrs. Darcy, Mr. and Mrs. Bingley, Lydia Wickham, Arthur and Anne de Bourgh, as they navigate the chaos of family gathering together for the holidays as well as Mary and Arthur’s new-found love and spoiler alert, Anne’s believed engagement to Arthur.
If you’ve ever attended a chaotic family holiday gathering, you’re sure to relate to this cast of characters. The plot in this show is completely adorable and it’s so fun to see Austen’s characters come back to life in this stage adaptation set a few years after the conclusion of ‘Pride and Prejudice’. Director Kimberly Senior and Stage Movement Director Joey Stone did a great job along with this talented cast of bringing this story to life on stage with some contemporary additions. As I watched the story unfold I enjoyed the unique mannerisms and presence each of the actors brought to the stage and could find myself heavily investing in each of the characters and strongly disliking a couple throughout. I was especially impressed with Rebecca Hurd (Mary Bennet) and Jordan Brodess (Arthur de Bourgh) who had incredible chemistry on stage and were adorably awkward throughout. It was also interesting to see Yousof Sultani as Mr. Darcy after seeing him in a completely different type of role just a few months ago in ‘Guards at the Taj’. His ability to portray such a diverse portfolio of characters in such a short timeframe was highly impressive and made me realize how great of a job The Rep does with casting for their various productions and the high caliber of talent they are bringing into Milwaukee.
With only a couple of weeks of runtime left for this production be sure to pick up your tickets ASAP! If you are looking for a unique holiday production to attend that isn’t ‘The Grinch’, ‘Elf’, ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’, or one of the other typical holiday staples I’d highly recommend that you check out ‘Miss Bennet: Christmas At Pemberley’.
Tickets for the show can be purchased online, by calling the Milwaukee Rep’s ticket office at 414-224-9490 or visiting the ticket office in-person at 108 East Wells Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202 while it is open Sunday – Friday from Noon – 6:00 PM.
