As a kid I loved music. As an adult, I still do. From as young as I can remember, I remember my dad playing tons of CDs for me both at our house and in the car. I’m not sure I fully appreciated it back then but today I can confidently say that my dad has always had good taste in music.
One of my favorite CDs from my youth was Johnny Cash: 16 Greatest Hits. With songs like, “Ring of Fire”, “I Walk the Line”, “Daddy Sang Bass”, “Man in Black”, and “A Boy Named Sue”, I remember listening to this disc on repeat with my dad throughout the entirety of my childhood. We had many summer road trips where I remember putting this in our CD player and thoroughly enjoying each and every song.
When I heard that the Milwaukee Repertory Theater was putting on a production called “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash” I could not be more excited. This show was everything I had hoped for and more. If you also have an affinity for Johnny Cash or his 16 Greatest Hits album you NEED to purchase your ticket and head over to the Rep immediately to check out this production.
This stellar cast of 5 performs some of Johnny’s greatest hits along with an interwoven narrative telling the story of part of Johnny’s life along with the music. With a run time of 2 hours, this show flew by and I was left wanting more. This show gets your toes tapping the entire 2 hours long and I had a hard time not singing along with songs like the hits mentioned at the beginning of this post. It brought back great memories of all of those times I listened to Johnny with my dad growing up.
So whether you’re a country music fan, Johnny Cash fan, or simply just a fan of good theater I’d highly recommend this performance of “Ring of Fire” found in the Stackner Cabaret at the Milwaukee Rep. You can get dinner or a drink in the Stackner Cabaret prior to the show so it’s a great idea for a night out!
This performance was originally set to run from March 22 – May 26 and it was recently extended to June 9 due to high demand and I can certainly understand why. Tickets are selling quickly so you’ll want to hurry and pick up yours today. You’ll forget that you’re sitting in a theater in Milwaukee as you’re transported to a honky tonk down in Nashville with Johnny’s tunes serenading you all evening long.
Tickets for the show can be purchased online, by calling the Milwaukee Rep’s ticket office at 414-224-9490 or visiting the ticket office in-person at 108 East Wells Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202 while it is open Sunday – Friday from Noon – 6:00 PM.
