A Little Bit of Nunsense

As a lifelong Catholic, nuns hold a special place in my heart.  Nuns who sing and dance, even better.  Having seen Sister Act at Sunset Playhouse a couple of years ago, I can confidently say that theatrical productions involving said singing and dancing nuns are a guilty pleasure.

Nunsense at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater is a laugh out loud comedy with many great musical numbers throughout.  The Little Sisters of Hoboken are in need of help after a culinary disaster nearly wipes out the convent.  So, Sister Mary Regina,
the Mother Superior, Sister Robert Anne, Sister Mary Amnesia, Sister Mary Hubert, Sister Mary Leo rally together to put together a fundraising variety show including song, dance, an audience quiz, and habit humor to keep you laughing all night long.

Perfectly situated in the Stackner Cabaret you feel like you are actually at their variety show and the set is well done to make you feel like you’re in the school gymnasium attached to the convent.  I wouldn’t want one of these nuns to scold me because I’m not sure I could keep a straight face!

All of the gals in the show did a great job portraying their respective characters but I did find the storyline of Sister Mary Amnesia to be quite entertaining.  Poor Sister Amnesia is suffering from, as indicated by her name, amnesia.  She spends the entire variety show trying to figure out who she was before entering the convent.  I guess you’ll just have to see the show to figure out if she is able to remember her true identity!

I’ll leave you with my favorite line from the show… “That Saint Francis is not A Sissi”. 😂 And trust me, there are more great lines where that came from.

Nunsense runs through January 20, 2020 and would make a great holiday gift for your special someone.  Tickets for the show can be purchased online, by calling the Milwaukee Rep’s ticket office at 414-224-9490 or visiting the ticket office in-person at 108 East Wells Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202 while it is open Sunday – Friday from Noon – 6:00 PM.
